Let’s talk about what is happening at work nowadays. Despite all the new means of communication we have all around us, people are actually feeling quite isolated in today’s world. We travel back and forth to work in hours of traffic alone in our cars, we live behind our screens, and come home feeling pretty disconnected from our family as well.
We try to handle whatever comes across our desk as quickly as possible and in a manner that requires as little contact as possible with others. But our heart isn’t in anything we do because we don’t really come to work because of a specific project at hand. It is the connection between humans that excites and motivates us. Remember how we ran out of bed when we were young and couldn’t wait to get outside to play with our friends? That is how everyone should feel about going to work. Kids work very hard running around, climbing and challenging one another but they don’t stop to think for a second how much energy they are using up because they are so immersed in their game.
So we’re a bit older now and dressed up for work and all that. But at heart we are still those adventurous little people that yearn for genuine human interaction, companionship and fun. That is what is missing from our lives nowadays and this is felt very acutely at the work place where we are expected to produce X, attend X amount of meetings every week, and write X reports. That is not what we were designed for. It is in our nature to seek renewal in everything we do, to push ourselves to develop, to invigorate one another, and this excitement reflects on the people around us and comes back to us a hundred times over.
So what are we really attempting to change? Not the people in a company. People are born with certain attributes, and are the product of their upbringing and environment. What we really want to change or should we say upgrade as quickly as possible are the relations between people. That is the key to everything because that is the core element at the foundation of every single issue in society today. All our problems whether financial, educational, ecological, or cultural have one common theme, and that is us humans.
Imagine jumping out of bed every day and running to work because you can’t wait to interact with your colleagues. We achieve this in a matter of weeks by taking people out of their normal routine and sitting them down to talk, and conduct some fun social exercises together. It doesn’t matter who they are, top executives, engineers, creative, and administrative – at the end of the day we are all human and must have a vibrant human environment around us to thrive.
We are also great believers in collective intelligence techniques which help prove our point – when people come together as equals where each part feels they are a vital part of a whole – something magical happens. We can’t really explain it, but it is quickly becoming a part of our new reality.
So what is the bottom line apart from improving relations with customers, investors, partners, between executives, and managers and employees? This new vibe that is created in the company breathes new life into the entire organization and this immediately impacts quarterly statements.
At the end of the day it is a very simple calculation for top decision-makers to make: continue doing things the old way and do not anticipate great results. Or get help in adjusting your company to suit the conditions of the new global stage, a world that is transparent and open, where we are realizing how dependent we are on one another. And expect the skies to open up because they will.
